Course: Assisting with the Neurologic Examination
Course Description
Within the Clinical Medical Assisting Program are 14 courses that each focus on medical assisting within a specific medical area or specialty. Assisting with the Neurologic Examination is one of these specialties. This course focuses on understanding the neurological system, the brain’s anatomy and the neurological disorders and diseases of the nervious system. It also deals with the physiology of the nervous system and the peripheral nervous system, symptoms and diagnosing procedures.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient Medical Assisting skills in the neurologic examination based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:
• Clinical Medical Assistant
Competencies (skills you will learn)
• Understand the vocabulary and terminology used in Neurology
• Understand the symptoms, diagnosing, testing and treatment, such as EMG/NCV, MRI
and venipunctures
• Proper sterile tray setups for sterile injections, procedures, EEG testing and lumbar
puncture assistance
• Properly perform patient education for the neurologic system
Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 15 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services. Assisting with the Neurologic Examination is a required course that is recommended to be taken after the Assisting with the Reproductive Examination course.

Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
