Course: Basic Vital Signs
Course Description
Basic Vital Signs will prepare the front office staff to help prepare a patient to be seen by the physician if the medical assistant is unavailable or needs additional help. This helps the patient flow run smoothly in a busy office. Having the ability to be cross trained will help make you more employable.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient basic skills to take and assess patient vital signs based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Skill Competence is available upon request.
This course fulfills requirements for the following Programs:

Competencies (skills you will learn)
• Be able to complete a medical history form
• Measure and record height and weight of a patient accurately
• Explain the purpose of triage in the medical office
• List and explain the categories for determining the urgency of a patient’s condition
• Know the appropriate patient education during triage of patient
• Identify the four vital signs and body functions they measure
• Accurately measure oral, rectal, and auxiliary temperature with disposable, electronic, and
infrared thermometers and identify the normal temperature value and accuracy of each
• Identify and measure normal pulse rates
• Measure respiration, identifying the normal rate and describing the quality characteristics to
be observed
• Measure blood pressure by palpation and auscultation, explaining pulse pressure and
normal findings
Course Structure
This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.
Course Length
The estimated length of this course is 30 hours. Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.
Admission Requirements
There are no specific requirements to take this course. However, courses in the Health Care Technologies Programs are to be taken in order. The course list can be found on the information sheet for each program or by contacting Student Services.
