Grading System for High School Students

Grades are determined by calculating the academic (work) average and the progress during the grade reporting period.

Step 1. Determine seat time hours for the student during the grade reporting period. Students must have 16 hours by mid-term and/or 36 hours by end of term in order to qualify for a recommended grade.

Step 2. Determine the academic (work) average completed during the grade reporting period.

Step 3. Using the percentage obtained in step 2, determine which of the five grade scales (I - V) will be used for calculating the grade during the reporting period using the chart below:

  Work Average Scale

93-100

I
  90 - 92 II
  87 - 89 III
  83 - 86 IV
  80 - 82 V

Step 4. Using Northstar, determine the student's progress during the grade reporting period.

Step 5. Using the correct grade scale for the student (I - V) locate the student's progress and grade on the scale.

Attendance (1) + Work (2) + Progress (3) = Grade

(1) Attendance is required; 16 hours minimum at midterm and 36 hours minimum by end of grade reporting term.

(2) Work is the average of all academic course work completed by the student during the grade reporting time frame. Due to the competency standards set, 80% is the lowest average possible.

(3) Progress is measured by dividing the competency hours the student completed during the grading period by the hours the student was enrolled during this same grading period. This calculation is easily accessible in the Northstar information system; however, this progress percentage does not directly equate to a letter grade.

I : 100 - 93 %
II : 92 - 90 %
III : 89 - 87 %
IV :  86 - 83 %
V : 82 - 80 %
